The Great Wing Debate: Drums vs. Flats with Melinda’s

The great wing debate is on, and Melinda’s is at the heart of it with a month-long poll and influencers fiercely debating: Drums versus Flats. As we gear up for National Chicken Wing Day on July 29th, Melinda’s has declared July as #WingMonth for the third consecutive year, featuring amazing wing content made with their arsenal of 41 craft pepper sauces and condiments.

This blog post features a video with pitmasters Pete Klein (@booyahsbbq) and Anthony Echarte (@pun_vs_food), each passionately defending their favorite part of the wing. As part of Melinda’s month-long celebration, you can vote and see the results of the great debate on their website here.

USA Today is also covering the Melinda’s event, which culminates on National Chicken Wing Day. The great wing debate has long been a sizzling topic among food lovers: are you a drum or a flat fan? Flats, with their higher skin-to-meat ratio, offer crispy skin and intense flavor in every bite. Drums, on the other hand, are leaner with fewer calories and less saturated fat, thanks to their meatier composition. Despite both being referred to as "chicken wings," they've stirred up quite a controversy in the wing-loving community.

Team Drums

Anthony “Pun” Echarte is a staunch supporter of team drums. He argues, “You got the good bite, you just roll it off your teeth, it comes off really nice and easy off the bone. Obviously, a little bit more meat and a little bit thicker, so a little bit of extra meat for me.” For Pun, the meatiness and ease of eating drums make them the superior choice.

Team Flats

Pete Klein is firmly in the flats camp. He says, “I’m a flat guy, cuz I can eat them quicker. Take out the small bone, twist it out, and the meat comes off the bone cleanly, one bite.” Pete appreciates the efficiency and the clean bite that flats offer.

Join the Debate

While National Chicken Wing Day is celebrated on July 29th, Melinda’s, a family-owned brand and pioneer in craft pepper sauces, has declared the entire month of July as Wing Month to honor this tasty tradition. They have kicked it off with the ultimate showdown: Drums vs. Flats. Fans are invited to join the debate on social media using #MelindasWingMonth and vote in “The Great Debate” on Melindas.com/DrumsvsFlats.

Even the godfathers of craft pepper sauce and founders of Melinda’s Hot Sauce, Greg and David Figueroa, are divided on the chicken wing issue. David is pro-flats, while Greg is team drums. Foodie influencer and wing connoisseur Patrick Springer (@patrickspringer) and Pete "Booyah" Klein (@booyahsbbq) both side with flats, while BBQ master Anthony “Pun” Echarte (@pun_vs_food) and Nate Tanos (@tanos_table) prefer the meatiness of drums.
